City Centre Taskforce support council’s funding bidWednesday, April 17, 2013

A vibrant city centre with interactive signage and active streetscapes are some of the features a newly formed City Centre taskforce want and they’re sharing their thoughts with the Federal Government.
The new City Centre Task Force comprises councillors Greg Martin and Chris Bonanno, Chamber of Commerce President Tim Miles, Ricky Dhaliwal from Spice and Flavor and Mark Laffin from the Mackay Grande Suites.

The group has thrown its support behind council’s $18.6 million City Centre Public Realm improvement project and council’s bid for $8.8 million in Regional Development Australia (RDA) funding to revitalise the city centre.

Tourism and Economic Development portfolio councillor Greg Martin said council will work closely with the City Centre Taskforce to improve our City Centre.

“Local businesses and members of the City Centre Taskforce are telling us they want to see the streets and public spaces improved to transform the City Centre into a diverse, vibrant and dynamic place,” he said.

“If our application is successful, the project will see both sides of Victoria Street from Sydney Street to Gregory Streets refurbished along with the historic Pioneer Shire Building and adjoining parkland.”

Cr Martin said it’s important that we invest in our principal centre.

“The Mackay City Centre plays a pivotal role in providing an extensive range of services including administration, entertainment, business and retail services to the wider communities of the Mackay Isaac and Whitsunday region.”

“The improvements will result in a more pedestrian friendly and attractive CBD with enhanced liveability and business vitality.”

Council is in the process of submitting its final RDA application and should hear by Friday, July 12 if their application has been successful.
