Mackay nets major indoor titlesFriday, September 25, 2015
The largest dinner the MECC has hosted will be part of an awards night for the 2016 Super Nationals Indoor Netball Tournament.
Council helped secure hosting rights for the national championships to be held at Mackay Indoor Sports Arena on Harbour Road from April 30 to May 7.
The dinner on the last night of the championships will be attended by 820 players and officials.
Tourism and Economic Development portfolio councillor Greg Martin said council was a major sponsor through its $1 million Invest Mackay Events Attraction Program.
“This is an exciting opportunity for Mackay and fits well with the funding we announced in our new budget,’’ Cr Martin said.
“We helped bid to host the major championships and have become principal partner as it will attract plenty of visitors to our region,’’ he said.
“Economic modelling is based on 1150 players, officials and spectators attending the nine-day event, plus 200 domestic day visitors.
“The economic benefits will be worth more than $2.1 million, which is equivalent to 11 jobs.”
Cr Martin said the titles would be followed by the 2016 Australian Masters Indoor Cricket Championships, which council also helped win hosting rights for, at the end of May.
“The Queensland Mining and Engineering Exhibition (QME) will follow soon after, so 2016 is shaping up as an extremely busy one,’’ he said.
Indoor Netball Federation of Australia (INFA) president Anton Croxford said it was extremely exciting to announce Mackay as the host region for the 2016 Super Nationals.
“It’s been great to partner with the Mackay Regional Council in securing our biggest event on the calendar,’’ Mr Croxford said.
“INFA will also be live streaming the back end of the tournament, which will engage some 10,000-plus viewers across the nation and the world,’’ he said.
Mackay Indoor Sports Arena manager Shawn Frerichs said hosting the Super Nationals Indoor Netball Tournament was a huge coup for the centre and our region.
“It will certainly put Mackay on the map,’’ he said.
“With the indoor cricket titles on a couple of weeks later, it is going to be an extremely busy month.
“Cricket Australia has already told us they’ll also look at using us for other major championships in the future.”
