Make your own Christmas cards and gift tags!

Families are encouraged to drop-in to Artspace Mackay in the holidays for free Christmas craft activities for all ages. Make beautiful Christmas cards and gift tags for your family and friends using fun alphabet stamps and collage. Stay for three minutes, or three hours if you’re having fun. Rew Hanks: Not Always Black and White

Rew Hanks is an established printmaker known for his brilliant linocuts. With a strong sense of the absurd, Hanks provides a much-needed critique of issues surrounding colonisation and its environmental legacies. His incredibly detailed linocuts are made on a large scale, with minute empirical accuracy to his subjects. Visit Artspace Mackay Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 3pm.

The Phantom Show

Nostalgic, surprising and fun! The Phantom Show curated by Peter Kingston and Dietmar Lederwasch, celebrates the evolution of this unique heroic character over the past 80 years. More than 30 artists contributed their various interpretations of the Ghost Who Walks through a variety of media and styles. Nature’s Christmas Decorations school holiday quiz

Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens

Win some sparkly Christmas decorations for your house. Wander through the Botanic Gardens and find some of nature’s decorations for Christmas. Find nature’s bells, baubles, stars and maybe a candle or two. There will be some questions to answer and some other hidden sparkly Christmas decorations just for fun. How many will you find? Quizzes are available at the Botanic Gardens or online on the Botanic Gardens website, www.mackayregionalbotanicgardens.com.au. Completed quizzes can be returned to Botanic Gardens Administration with a winner drawn Friday, December 18.

Drawing in Nature: Kids Botanical Art

Wednesday, January 6, Thursday, January 7 and Friday January 8, at 10am – 12pm
Meeting Room, Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens

Botanical art combines detail, accuracy and artistry. This two hour session includes a short walk, using magnifying glasses and lens to see the small details and features of leaves and flowers and then transfer those close observations to paper using graphite pencils, watercolour pencils and some watercolour paints. Each group is limited to 10 children (5 – 15 years), $5 per child, payment and bookings by Wednesday, December 23 ensures your child’s attendance. The finished artworks will be displayed as an exhibition in the Lagoons Gallery and Café during late January and February. Unleash your inner artist.

Special Plant Species and Hidden Creatures School Holiday Quiz

From Monday, January 4 until Wednesday, January 20, 2016

Wander through the Botanic Gardens and discover some of the special plant species which only grow in our region and some hidden creatures that live in these habitats. Answer some questions along the way and be surprised by what you find. There is a magnifying glass, a creature observation container and a special plant species to be won! Quizzes are available from Monday, January 4 at the Botanic Gardens or online on the Botanic Gardens website, www.mackayregionalbotanicgardens.com.au. Completed quizzes can be returned to Botanic Gardens Administration, winner drawn Wednesday, January 20, 2016.

Recycled Art

This 2 hour session is an opportunity for children to make use of recycled materials to create vivid plant forms and flowers. The colourful creations will then be on display in the Tropical Shade Garden or the Lagoons Gallery and Cafe to compliment the Kids Botanic Art Exhibition during late January and February. Each group is limited to 10 children, children to be aged over five, $5 per child. Payment with bookings by Friday, January 8 ensures your child attendance. Who is Buzzing in the Botanic Gardens?

Bug, Beetles, Bees… Who is that buzzing at the Botanic Gardens? Children will be introduced to small creatures on plants and flowers during a walk through the Botanic Gardens and later explore some interesting facts about them. Why are these creatures in everyone’s gardens? Are they important? Making a colorful creature to buzz home with them will be part of the two hour session. Take a step back in time and educate your children on the history of our region. Explore the iconic Greenmount Homestead. As one of Mackay’s most valued historic attractions, the grounds contain a number of buildings including a 1915 Queenslander homestead which houses a collection of more than 20,000 historical items. Entry fees: adult $6, concession $4, student/child $2.

Sarina Sugar Shed tours are a delight for all ages! On the tour you will see the special miniature sugar processing and distilling equipment that has been sourced from all over the world! Along with the processing mill, there are multimedia presentations, souvenir shop, picnic areas, easy parking and wheelchair-friendly access. Tours run at 9.30am, 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm, visitors will need to arrive 15 minutes prior to tour. Tours can unexpectedly fill up. To avoid disappointment, please call through to secure your booking. Entry prices are $12 – $22, family and group booking rates available. Children receive free fairy floss and non-alcoholic ginger beer as part of the tour as well as free educational handouts.
