Mackay to Celebrate QLD DayTuesday, June 5, 2018

Queensland Day in Mackay will morph into a week-long celebration.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, June 6) is not only the rugby league 2018 State of Origin series opener – it is also, fittingly, Queensland Day.

The day will be celebrated in Mackay with a special Queensland Day Greater Whitsunday Farmers’ Market at Bluewater Quay from 7am to 11am.

During the Farmers’ Market, a community art installation, depicting what it means to be a Queenslander living in Mackay, will be unveiled.

There will also be cooking demonstrations by celebrity chef Matt Golinski, who is in town for the Greater Whitsunday Food Network Farm to Plate Dinner at the MECC on Thursday and bus tour on Friday.

The art unveiled tomorrow will also have a community launch at a Celebrate Queensland Day Under the Stars – River Street Twilight Market this Friday (June 8) at Bluewater Quay.

Those markets will double as a second anniversary celebration of the Greater Whitsunday Farmers’ Markets.

Mackay City Centre has been working with the Queensland Government and Greater Whitsunday Food Network Incorporated to stage these two events to help celebrate Queensland Day.

Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said it had been 159 years since Queensland separated for New South Wales.

“We can all appreciate what a good decision that was,’’ she said. “Let’s celebrate our Queensland pride and show what it means to be part of this great state.”

Acting Mayor Cr Karen May said the Queensland maroon would be a theme at these events, as well as others planned during the week.

Over the past few weeks, local artists from BASEarts Mackay have been holding a series of workshops with local community groups, discussing the topic of what it means to be a Queenslander.

The aim has been to reflect on their daily lives in Mackay to gain a greater understanding of how they, and Mackay, fit into the bigger picture of Queensland.

A diverse range of community groups, including those representing minority groups, have been involved.

Each group was assigned a letter spelling out “QLD DAY MACKAY” and, with the assistance of BASEarts Mackay, have created amazing images which have been printed onto cut-out ply.

Quote: “It has been a wonderful project to work on and a pleasure to work with the community groups, who have all shown such enthusiasm to be involved and have felt empowered by being invited to have their message heard through art.” – Jodie Connolly, of BASEarts Mackay, who has managed the project and worked with artists to create the letters.

The QLDDAY MACKAY letters will be displayed at Bluewater Quay as part of the Celebrate Queensland Day Event during the Greater Whitsunday Farmers’ Market on Wednesday (June 6) and Twilight Market on Friday (June 8).

Friday (June 8) marks the second anniversary of Mackay’s Greater Whitsunday Farmers’ Market. The weekly Wednesday market was originally established in Wood Street Park before moving to Bluewater Quay. A monthly twilight market was introduced in February this year and will be open between 4pm and 8pm, offering stalls loaded with fresh seasonal produce and gift ideas.

To celebrate the anniversary and Queensland Day, there will be a special program of entertainment from local musicians and street performers, as well as fun competitions.
