Civic Precinct’s Wonderland transformation beginsTuesday, June 19, 2018

A velvet-draped and wood-furnished Wonderland Spiegeltent featuring vintage stained-glass windows will appear in Mackay in July.

This ambient venue will be the setting for two spellbinding shows.

They include an old time travelling circus, Circus Wonderland (July 7-15), and Rouge (July 20-19), a decadent blend of sensational acrobatics, operatic cabaret and cheeky burlesque.

The disassembled Spiegeltent has just arrived at the MECC after a sell-out season in Port Douglas.

Wonderland Entertainment and Leisure’s director, Melissa Head was in town today to inspect the Wonderland site between Artspace and the MECC.

“The tent is going to look amazing in this space and it is ideal being so close to the City Centre,” Ms Head said.

“We have travelled around Australia for many years and are thrilled to be in Mackay as a part of the wonderful Mackay Mazda Festival of Arts programming.”

Described by critics as “a burst of energy with rippling muscles and plenty of tongue-in-cheek antics”, Rouge is an adults-only show that will appear as part of the Festival.

Ms Head said Rouge was from the Australian creators of Papillon.

“It’s a non-stop celebration of the astonishing, the surprising and the downright sexy. Rouge is an adult circus cabaret for grown-ups.”

Mayor Greg Williamson said he was looking forward to the Wonderland program kicking off with Circus Wonderland in time for the school holidays.

“It’s going to be tremendous to have thrilling circus stars performing astounding stunts, feats and tricks right here in our Civic Precinct,” Cr Williamson said.

“This Circus has a premier cast of Australian and international superstars, with everyone from a strongman and contortionist to a troupe of agile acrobats,” he said.

“I’m told it’ll be a hilarious and breathtaking show for the whole family, and I can’t wait.”
