Porters 135 years old and still celebrating!Friday, August 31, 2018
Porters has had lots of reason to celebrate lately. The family-owned and operated business recently celebrated its 135th birthday in August and the Mackay store was recently crowned Hardware Store of the Year Over 2500m2 and Garden Centre of the Year at a recent Queensland Industry Awards event… that’s a lot to get excited about!
Hard work, resilience, innovation and community spirit has been the foundation pillars of the businesses success and being able to continually evolve to suit the changing customer needs. The most recent and significant changes to the business was following the family’s decision in 2017 to join Mitre 10 and undertake an extensive renovation and refresh of the flagship Mackay store. The Porters team has worked hard to achieve a first-class shopping destination, including seven-day convenient trading hours.
The popular 90-seat Charlies Café, Inspirations Paint store, Garden Centre, Principal Kitchens and Plumbing Plus Showroom and a dedicated Weber Specialist BBQ Centre. As well as extended ranges in DIY building materials, power tools and hand tools, homewares and giftware, outdoor living and general hardware – Porters Mitre 10 Mackay really is the “one-stop shop” for all of your home décor and home project needs. The Porters Mackay complex also caters to the trade and building construction market with a dedicated trade building supplies and plumbing supplies centre. Coupled with the large customer parking facilities, kids’ playground, delivery services and the team’s friendly CAN DO attitude; Porters Mitre 10 Mackay is a must visit within the City Centre.
The Porters business has been a part of the City Centre landscape since 1883 and has been heavily involved in the changes and developments throughout the years. The Porters story began when Charles Porter, a building contractor originally from Scotland, tendered a job out of Brisbane to build the Empress of India Hotel (known now as Taylor’s Hotel). There was nowhere in town to buy his hardware and he was sourcing building supplies from south of Mackay and shipping via the Pioneer River. He soon made the decision to set up his own timber and joinery business, and Porters has grown and evolved since. Today, Porters is a proud sixth generation family business, experiencing strong growth over many decades through the family’s willingness to adapt and diversify to suit the changing economic market. Managing director Gavan Porter also credits the company’s “personal touch” to its success and the close relationships with staff, suppliers and customers.
Supporting locals and community spirit is at the heart of the Porters culture and today the company employs more than 250 local staff across all divisions, including fourth, fifth and sixth generation Porter family members and invests significantly into the local community through sponsorships and donation support to a wide array of community groups and associations.
